Why Mental Health Education is Important

According to the CDC

“Teaching mental health lessons in school can reduce stigma and improve students’ knowledge and attitudes about mental health. Students are also more likely to ask for help.”

Center for Disease Control and Prevention

According to the CDC, this is what a mental health education program should include:

  • Teaching about mental health, emotional distress, and the causes and symptoms of mental illnesses.
  • Describing stigma about mental illness and explaining how to reduce it.
  • Emphasizing that mental illnesses are treatable.
  • Discussing reasons why people do not ask for help.
  • Encouraging students to talk with trusted adults and seek support when they have a mental health concern.

When you hire Mind Blossom,
you support a good cause

All of our profits are reinvested into developing free of cost mental health education programs in underserved communities.

These communities are characterized by a lower than average household income, lack of access to treatment and support, high levels of stigma, and being of a marginalized community, such as people of color, women, and LGBTQIA+.

When you hire Mind Blossom for any service, you are directly empowering the lives of the folks that cannot afford these programs.

Dr. (Bülow) Yilmam gave a guest lecture in my undergraduate course, and it was truly the highlight of the semester. She engaged the students with icebreakers and effortlessly got them talking about uncomfortable topics. In the words of my co-instructor participation was greater “on a logarithmic scale” for Dr. (Bülow) Yilmam’s lecture. She is charismatic, relatable and understands the science deeply. I would recommend her and Mind Blossom to anyone

Who is Mental Health Education for?

Mental Health Education is for everyone.

YOUTH

Adolescents, aged 12 to 18, navigate a transformative period marked by not only physiological but also emotional and cognitive shifts. Mental Health Education equips them with the tools to not only enhance self-regulation but also empowers them to recognize early signs of mental health challenges. By doing so, it acts as a proactive measure to address issues before they escalate, fostering an environment where implicit stigmas are dismantled. This, in turn, encourages open communication and a willingness to seek help when needed.

PARENTS

Research on mental health education for parents has consistently shown robust findings. Since the 1980s, studies have revealed that parents who engage in mental health education not only enhance their coping skills but also report increased feelings of capability, reducing their likelihood of facing mental health challenges.

The impact of supporting parents through mental health education is especially potent, as the acquired skills and knowledge serve as a positive example for their children. By bolstering parental well-being, we contribute to the development of healthy family dynamics and effectively disrupt cycles of stigma across generations,

PROFESSIONALS

Research consistently highlights the impact of educating professionals like employers, HR managers, supervisors, teachers, nurses, and coaches. After systematic mental health education, they are less prone to burnout, more adept at supporting others, and contribute significantly to stigma reduction. These programs correlate with enhanced performance in students, athletes, and employees. Notably, studies report that every time a company invest $1 in mental health resources, they save $6.

Mothers benefit tremendously from mental health education

“There is no influence so powerful as that of the mother” – Sara Josepha Hale

Studies have demonstrated that mothers are particularly important across all family members’ health and wellbeing.

In this talk, Dr. Yilmam presents how caregivers, but particularly mothers, benefit from mental health education. She also provides a concrete example of how such a program can be implemented in a cost-effective manner.

The Impact of Mental Health Education

can be Quantified

We can measure:

Their knowledge and practice of evidence-based coping skills, like reframing, deep breathing and thought records
Their implicit stigma and discrimination against people with mental health challenges or mental illness
Their ability to effectively and compassionately communicate about mental health
Their ability to identify warning signs of mental health challenges and illness
Their willingness to seek support for themselves or others
Their ability to assist themselves or others find support

We collaborate with researchers to measure the impact of our programs

Not only is our programs grounded in science, we also conduct research to continuously improve our services.
